The Irvine Company transferred ownership of Bommer Canyon and portions of Shady Canyon to the City of Irvine in 2002. The transfer was a key part of the city’s Open Space Initiative, created in 1988 by the city and Irvine Company as an innovative way to preserve even greater amounts of open space while ensuring Irvine’s orderly master-planned growth. Bommer Canyon is rich in both natural beauty and Irvine Ranch lore: For decades it was the site of annual noisy, dusty and all-around exciting cattle roundups.
