Black Star Canyon is known as much for its history as for its beautiful topography. Its name comes from the Black Star Coal Mining Company, which operated a coal mine near the canyon’s mouth in the late 19th Century. The canyon was the setting for a deadly armed conflict in 1831 between trappers and Native Americans; legend has it the canyon is haunted as a result. The canyon’s stark red rock cliffs and soaring vistas make it a favorite destination for hikers.
