Black Star Canyon Wilderness Park

Black Star Canyon is known as much for its history as for its beautiful topography. Its name comes from the Black Star Coal Mining Company, which operated a coal mine near the canyon’s mouth in the late 19th Century. The canyon was the setting for a deadly armed conflict in 1831 between trappers and Native Americans; legend has it the canyon is haunted as a result. The canyon’s stark red rock cliffs and soaring vistas make it a favorite destination for hikers.

Characterized by soaring red rock cliffs and sweeping vistas of Irvine Lake and the Pacific Coast, Black Star Canyon features a diverse habitat with many rare species of plants and animals.
